As retail opens, online purchase intentions decline – even in grocery: Study


With many market watchers predicting the surge in online grocery shopping is likely to continue, new data from IMI International suggests differently, with survey participants saying that as retail continues to open, their intentions are to purchase more in-store, including visiting grocery stores.

Wave 9: Global Recovery & Playbook V4” data collected from an in-field study conducted between July 10 and August 17 with input from 39 countries, including Canada, shows that shoppers are eager to shop at retail, including visiting grocery stores and shopping malls.

Since July 2020, online grocery retail purchase intentions in Canada have declined by 13 per cent, while in-store is showing an increase of 19 per cent.

The data “further reinforces that people are eager to go out, see people and do something, says Vanessa Toperczer, vice president of IMI International.

IMI’s NextWave global reports have been ongoing for the past six months. “Faced with continued uncertainty around the globe, over the past six months we have released global reports focused on better understanding consumer attitudes, emotions and behaviour to help navigate this time,” adds Toperczer.
