With beer’s most popular selling season around the corner, Beer Industry Canada says that the industry’s future is unclear, given the current pandemic and closure of pubs, sports, festivals and social gatherings.

Even before the pandemic, Beer Industry Canada says in its new 2020 Industry Trends report that beer sales in the country have been on a continual decline with national total sales down 3.0 per cent in 2019.

The association notes that the current crisis is expected to have direct impacts on the industry and Canadian breweries that “also support a large supply chain across the country.”

It suggests in its report that federal excise relief in the form of the roll-back of the April 11.9 per cent increase and the deferral of upcoming monthly payments “would go a long way in helping brewers navigate this challenging period and position the industry for future growth.”
