BREAKING NEWS: Metro workers hand union a 97 % strike vote

Workers at 54 of Metro’s Ontario stores have given their union a massive 97% vote in favour of strike action.

The vote was held on Monday by Locals 175 and 633, representing 6500 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. It gives the union a powerful negotiating tool in its talks with the grocery chain.

The union has asked the Ministry of Labour to appoint a conciliator and says it is trying to get dates set to continue the talks.

“The union continues to pursue a negotiated fair deal with the employer and we hope this action by the members will motivate the employer to return to the table to achieve that goal,” said UFCW Local 175 president Shawn Haggerty, as reported here. A Metro spokesperson reportedly declined to be interviewed for the story.

The union’s last contract expired in November.
