Several Canadian grocery chains and CPG suppliers are ranked among the top companies in Canada when it comes to animal welfare commitments.
The Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard developed by Mercy for Animals is the first annual report to rank food companies operating in Canada on their animal welfare progress. The report scores 40 major food companies on how they’re performing on key animal welfare issues based on the group’s policies in three areas: public better chicken commitment; time-bound cage-free egg; and time-bound crate-free pork.
Whole Foods Market ranked in the gold tier, meaning it has implemented all three policies and is publicly reporting its progress.
Loblaw, Metro, Save-On-Foods and Sobeys are part of the silver tier, in that they’ve implemented two of the three policies and are publicly reporting their progress. CPG suppliers in this tier include McCain Foods, Nestlé, Unilever, Campbell’s, and Kellogg’s.
The scorecard will be published annually and will keep Canadians informed about how companies rank on animal welfare.
