Costco Wholesale Canada comp sales increased 10.2 per cent, while U.S. comp sales were up 6.3 per cent and e-commerce sales surged 21.1 per cent. On the same day it released its monthly earnings, Costco said it planned to start scanning membership cards at the entrance of all of its stores.

Grocery Business has confirmed that Costco Wholesale Canada will also roll out the scanners through its stores over the next few months.

Costco says it is installing membership scanners at the entrances of all of its locations to discourage non-members from shopping at the stores.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse. Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card,” the retailer stated on its customer service page.

Costco began to test the technology earlier this year, with Costco Wholesale CEO Richard Galanti stating more people had been sharing memberships since the pandemic in 2020.
