COVID measures impact Costco Wholesale April 2020 sales


COVID-19 measures such as social distancing restrictions cut into Costco Wholesale April 2020 sales. Comparable sales for the four weeks ending May 3, 2020 decreased 5 per cent in Canada and remained flat in the U.S. 

Total net sales of the four weeks ending May 3, 2020, were $11.39 billion, a decrease of 1.8 per cent from $11.60 billion last year. However, sales for the 35-week weeks ending May 3, 2020 increased 7.8 per cent reaching $107.65 billion, up from $99.89 billion. Sales for that 35-week period in Canada and the U.S. were up 5.1 per cent and 7.1 per cent respectively.

Costco reports that “April sales were negatively impacted by COVID-19. Stay-at-home orders, social distancing restrictions and some mandatory closures led to decreased traffic and sales in our warehouses. Limited service in Travel and our Food Courts; closures of most of our Optical, Hearing Aid and Photo departments, and lower volume and price deflation in our gasoline business negatively impacted our April sales by an estimated 12 percentage points, of which approximately 70 per cent related to gasoline.”
