Amazon to open its own grocery store in 2020

Amazon has confirmed that it will open its first grocery store next year. The new store will open in the Woodland Hills neighbourhood of Los Angeles and will not be operated under the Whole Foods banner.

Amazon confirmed the opening to the media after it posted a number of job positions for the location. Amazon didn’t reveal much about its plans, but according to at least one report, the job postings referred to the new store as “Amazon’s first grocery store,” which some media reported suggests two things: one, that the store will run under the Amazon brand and two, that more locations are likely to be announced in future.

While Amazon has pioneered high-tech grocery shopping with systems like its Amazon Go checkout technology, the company reportedly says that checkout at the new store will be “conventional.”

According to c|net, the Wall Street Journal last month reported that Amazon is already looking at further locations in Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.
