BC government appoints special officer in Sobeys dispute

In an attempt to resolve an ongoing dispute between UFCW Local 1518 and Sobeys in British Columbia, the provincial government has appointed Vince Ready as special officer with power to mediate between the two parties.

The appointment came after the president of Local 1518 appealed to the government to intervene. Ready is a well known mediator and arbitrator with extensive experience in the retail food industry.

Negotiations between the company and the union to renew their collective agreement reached an impasse in March. The union accuses Sobeys of failing to respond to its proposals.

Local 1518 represents about 4500 Safeway employees in BC. Sobeys owns about 60 Safeway stores in the province.
