BREAKING: Amazon plans to launch grocery chain

Amazon plans to launch a new grocery chain with dozens of stores across the U.S. The first location could open as early as the end of 2019 in Los Angeles, according to Grocery Dive, which bases its report on an article in the Wall Street Journal.

The chain would be separate from Amazon’s Whole Foods operation. At around 35,000 square feet, the stores would carry a wider range of products than Whole Foods. Prime spots could be in strip malls as well as open-air shopping centres.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon plans to acquire regional grocery chains with around a dozen stores each to speed up the growth of the new grocery brand. It is in negotiations to open stores in shopping centres in major U.S. cities including San Francisco, Seattle and Philadelphia.
