Canada’s new safe food law

Canada’s new safe food law and regulations take effect next week. Effective January 15, the Safe Food for Canadians Act and the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations come into force, superseding 14 sets of regulations, reports Food Safety News.

With the change, the focus of food safety legislation will shift to prevention of foodborne illnesses by means of prevention through risk management and increased emphasis on traceability through the food supply chain.

The new consolidated regulations will require food businesses that import or prepare food for export or to be sent across provincial or territorial borders to have licences, as well as preventive controls that outline steps to address potential risks to food safety, says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. “They will also help reduce the time it takes to remove unsafe food from the marketplace by requiring businesses to trace their food back to their supplier and forward to whom they sold their products.”
