Canada to revisit voluntary salt reduction targets

Ottawa has announced that it plans to come up with a new voluntary salt reduction initiative.

The announcement came after a Health Canada report found that Canadians are ingesting 2760 mg of sodium a day, almost twice the recommended daily amount.

Health Canada says that although it introduced a proposal earlier this year to mandate front of package warnings on foods high in sodium, sugars and saturated fat, more will need to be done. It is planning to revise its voluntary sodium reduction program for per-packaged and restaurant foods and is also putting together a monitoring scheme to report on progress.
