Costco brings better food access to Toronto’s Thorncliffe Park

A new Costco warehouse store in Toronto is making grocery shopping easier for residents of one of the cities “priority neighbourhoods.”

Thorncliffe Park is densely populated and residents there have below average incomes. The city has listed it as a “priority neighbourhood” for better food access and availability. In the past, grocery shopping meant they had to take long trips across the city. The new location, which opened at the end of July, is close to home and also greatly expands the variety of food residents have access to.

The new location will carry 50 new products to cater to the needs of local residents, 70 per cent of whom were born outside Canada. The store features a strong halal selection reflecting the fact that over 80 per cent of Thorncliffe Park residents are Muslim.

Costco says the new store will employ 250 people, and local municipal councillor Jon Burnside said Costco told him 180 of them are from the neighbourhood.
