Costco has opened its largest Canadian warehouse club in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The new 182,000 square-foot location features wider aisles and a larger selection of food offerings than the previous Costco St. John’s warehouse.

It has a wider variety of specialty departments, such as an on-site bakery, fresh meat, expanded produce area, rotisserie chicken section, an optical centre – including an on-site independent optometrist – a newly-introduced hearing aid centre, photo centre, tire centre, food court, gas station with 50 per cent more pumps, propane station and a pharmacy.

With 20 checkout registers – two more than the former location – the warehouse features a range of new business centre items as well as 300 more parking spots, bringing total parking capacity to 1,000 spaces.

“With our newly expanded warehouse, we can bring even more benefits of a Costco membership to St. John’s, and of course the remaining residents and businesses of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Pierre Riel, senior vice president and general manager, Costco Wholesale Eastern Canada at the June 27 opening ceremony. “This warehouse is the largest in Canada and we are very proud to share this new location with our valued members and member businesses in the local community and throughout the area.”

Costco says the new location has created an additional 80 jobs.
