Feds to provide $50 M in assistance for temp foreign worker program

The Federal goverment has announced $50 million in funding to provide financial assistance for farmers and processors as their newly-arrived foreign workers comply with the mandatory 14-day self-isolation period during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The financial program provides $1,500 per worker and will be available as long as the Government’s isolation procedures are in force. Government officials will be monitoring to ensure these funds are used in their intended manner and violators will be dealt with accordingly.
CPMA President Ron Lemaire says “Canada’s reliance on foreign workers to plant, maintain and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables is recognized by the Government and CPMA deeply appreciates Minister Bibeau’s announcement today to secure industry capacity to provide fresh Canadian food. Now, more than ever, access to healthy food is necessary to support the health of all Canadians.”

The announcement comes in addition to the many financial programs already in place to assist the agri-food industry and other Canadians. To learn more about government assistance for the produce industry in support issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, visit CPMA’s COVID-19 updates webpage.
