Giant Tiger expanding, increasing to 300 stores

Giant Tiger Stores Limited is planning to expand during the pandemic as demand for discount products are up.

It plans to increase to 300 stores in Canada, upgrading from its current 259 locations, and improve e-commerce.

“Our bricks-and-mortar coverage of the country still trails the pack a little bit,” says Paul Wood, president and chief executive officer of Giant Tiger. “As a private company, we make our decisions based on what’s best for the long-term profitability and success of the company.”

Giant Tiger offers a convenient layout and wider selection than some other discount stores, which industry experts say is the reason it has outlasted other discount chains.

“In more recent years, we’ve continued to expand into some pretty typical markets,” says Wood. “We’re in the same shopping node as our key competitors – Walmart is within five kilometres of our stores in 90 per cent of our markets.”

Wood says the new stores could be placed in urban centres.
