Loblaw criticized for demanding customer ID on $25 gift card


Loblaw is in hot water with Canada’s privacy commissioner over its demand that some customers provide personal ID before receiving a $25 gift card. The cards have been offered since January after Loblaw’s admitted it took part in a bread price-fixing scheme.

The commissioner has asked Loblaw why some customers have been asked for driver’s licence or health card information before they get their cards, while many others only had to provide a name and address via an online form.

One customer told CBC News that he feared identity theft. In addition to perceived security risk, consumers have expressed outrage at being asked for the information at all.

“The driver’s licence number is sensitive and valuable to those intent on committing identity crimes,” reported CBC News, quoting from the website of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. The site says that retailers photocopying or scanning licences “generally goes too far,” because a licence contains “more information than is needed for most business purposes.”

Loblaw says the privacy commissioner’s interest is an opportunity for it to show how it’s protecting consumer privacy, and that the ID checks protect consumer interests.
