Loblaw, McCain, Danone among founders of biodiversity coalition

Loblaw Companies, McCain Foods and Danone are part of a new business-led initiative to protect and restore biodiversity within business supply chains and product portfolios.

Named “One Planet Business for Biodiversity” (OP2B), the agriculture-centric coalition was launched this week in New York at the UN Climate Action Summit. The formal launch announcement was delivered by Emmanuel Faber, chairman and CEO of global food and beverage company Danone.

A total of 19 businesses are taking part. Aside from Loblaw, McCain and Danone, participating businesses are: Balbo Group, Barry Callebaut, DSM, Firmenich, Google, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, Kellogg Company, Kering, Livelihood Funds, L’Oreal, Mars, Migros Ticaret, Nestlé, Symrise, Unilever and Yara. Together the participating companies account for combined total revenues of around US$500 billion, and sell products in more than 120 countries.

OP2B member companies have committed to take tangible actions, on an individual and collective basis, to develop innovative solutions aimed at protecting and enhancing biodiversity in agricultural systems. There are three main focus areas:

  1. Scaling regenerative agriculture practices and alternative farming practices
  2. Developing product portfolios to boost cultivated biodiversity and increase the resilience of the food and agriculture models.
  3. Eliminating deforestation and enhancing the management, restoration and protection of high value natural ecosystems.

OP2B members have committed to develop, by June 2020, a compendium of systemic, meaningful, measurable solutions that can be implemented by OP2B members in their value chains. By October 2020 they will disclose “ambitious, timebound and measurable commitments” during CBD COP15, together with policy proposals to help deliver successful outcomes.
