New “Predictive Basket” speeds up online grocery shopping

A newly developed “Predictive Basket” software tool will speed up online grocery shopping by using machine learning to predict a shopper’s purchases.

The new tool has been launched by FACT-Finder, which says it could reduce online grocery shopping time by two-thirds.

Instead of scrolling through long lists of “usual” or “favourite” shopping items, the shopper would be presented with a short, targeted list of predicted shopping items based on prior shopping behavior.

The tool could also increase purchase size. Prof. Barry Schwartz, who analyzed “the problem of choice,” found that people presented with too many choices actually buy less. By narrowing down the list of suggested/predicted items to a few that are highly likely, Predictive Basket could prompt shoppers to buy more.

Predictive Basket is already in live beta testing with shoppers in Europe.
