New grocery stores on the way for Calgary’s downtown

Calgary Co-op and Loblaws are vying to open the first new grocery store in Calgary’s dynamic downtown east side.

According to a Global News report,, Calgary Co-op is in negotiations to find a site for a new smaller-format store in addition to an existing store in the Beltline.

A company executive said the new store would be targeted at customers who might shop as often as every day, given the more limited storage space available to inner-city dwellers.

Loblaws already has an 82,000 sq ft store under construction in the new “5th and Third” shopping complex near the East Village. It’s scheduled to open in 2019.
