One third of young adults frequently check nutrition facts

A new study finds that only a third of young adults (ages 25 to 36) are in the habit of checking out the nutrition facts panel on food packaging.

The study, from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Medical School, found that the most regular label readers are female shoppers with higher education and income who regularly prepare food and are physically active or would be considered overweight.

What are they checking up on? Sugars (74.1%), total calories (72.9%), serving size (67.9%) and the ingredients (65.8%).

Other research has found that two-thirds of shoppers find package labeling difficult to understand, while half say that the labels are uninformative.
