Other food retailers under pressure to sign grocery code after Loblaw signs on

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said this move would be a “net benefit” for Canadian consumers.

François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada, is calling for Walmart and Costco to sign on to the Grocery Code of Conduct.

Following Loblaw’s decision to support the code, Champagne says that the government would continue to push for the two retailers and other independents to sign on. He alluded to possible legislation coming if other grocery retailers delayed support.

“This is not a matter of choice. Canadians expect you to sign the Code of Conduct. And we want you to do that very quickly. We’re going to keep the pressure on them,” he said in an interview with CTV.

He said he’s optimistic that because Loblaw has announced support, he believes that a deal will be reached in a short period.

In an announcement on May 16, made at the Loblaw’s Supplier Summit with more than 1,300 suppliers, the grocery chain affirmed its support following a series of discussions held with the code interim board and working group over the past six months.
