Produce plant fire causes $2.3 M in damage

A fire at a produce plant in Leamington, ON, near Windsor, caused $2.3 M in damage to the building and the goods stored inside it. The fire broke out Saturday night and was likely started by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

The plant belongs to Westmoreland-TopLine farms, a grower and shipper of greenhouse produce, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants and organic produce such as organic tomatoes on the vine and grape tomatoes. It also houses the firm’s headquarters. The company operates greenhouses in Canada, the US, Mexico and Central and South America, reports the Windsor Star.

The blaze was exacerbated by a heat wave that was underway at the time. No one was injured.
