Shoppers Drug Mart opening 44 pharmacy care clinics across Alberta

Shoppers Drug Mart has announced plans to open 44 additional pharmacy care clinics across Alberta in 2024.

The move is part of a capital investment plan in the province in which the company has invested $77 million thus far since 2022.

“We’re pleased to announce this record milestone with the government of Alberta today — 103 pharmacy care clinics across the province by year end — in a jurisdiction that proudly welcomes investment and innovation for the benefit of the province. We’re grateful to partner with a government who understands the valuable role pharmacists can play in the delivery of primary care and are proud to be doing our part within the broader public system to make sure patients can get the care they need, when they need it,” said Jeff Leger, pharmacist and president of Shoppers Drug Mart.

With the addition of these new clinics, the total count of Shoppers clinics in Alberta is expected to reach 103 by the end of 2024, a statement reads. Shoppers’ first pharmacy care clinic opened in Lethbridge in June 2022.

New stores to offer redesigned layout to improve customer experience

At a time when Alberta is experiencing rapid population growth, stakeholders say the expansion is critical to providing essential primary health care services. They add it could ease the burden on the provincial health care system. Statistics from Shoppers reveal that nearly 200,000 patients have already visited the existing clinics, with 35 per cent of these visits being about chronic conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

The upcoming clinics will feature a redesigned layout and are set to open in Okotoks, Sherwood Park, Calgary, Edmonton, Stony Plain, and Spruce Grove.

The announcement was made at an event attended by Premier Danielle Smith, Jobs, Economy and Trade Minister Matt Jones, Health Minister Adriana LaGrange, and representatives from Invest Alberta.

“Today’s announcement is not just about expanding healthcare services; it’s about enhancing the quality of life for Albertans. The new Shoppers clinics will be instrumental in reducing wait times and improving healthcare outcomes in the province,” said Premier Danielle Smith.
