Sobeys offers sensory-friendly shopping at Nova Scotia store

Sobeys has launched a weekly “sensory-friendly” hour for customers sensitive to sensory inputs at its Fundy Trail Centre store in Truro, NS.

The store ran a couple of pilots in December and decided to implement the full hour based on the positive feedback it received.

During the hour, which takes place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sundays, lighting is reduced, music is switched off, carts aren’t collected, and an extra cashier acts as a runner so announcements don’t have to be made by PA, reports the Truro News.

The reduction in noise and other sensory inputs is important to customers who suffer from acute sensitivity to sensory inputs, including people on the autism spectrum.

Sobey’s chain was already running the same service in Prince Edward Island and contacted Autism Nova Scotia about implementing it at the Truro location.

The two organizations are discussing the possibility of extending the program to other locations.
