Study finds Canadians using technology, digital tools for holiday shopping


Canadians are increasingly turning to digital sources for holiday shopping, according to a 2017 Holiday Shopping Survey from Accenture.

Now in its sixth year, the Accenture survey found that 66 per cent of shoppers say they’re familiar with Google Home and 75 per cent are already using it or would use it to buy gifts this season. And 61 per cent are using or are aware of Amazon Alexa as another digital holiday shopping tool.

Online, mobile and social media sites continue to be the most popular tools survey respondents say they use to conduct their holiday shopping.

Two other key findings:

  • In-store versus online shopping

According to the survey, 47 per cent of Canadian shoppers said they plan to do the majority of their holiday shopping in-store versus 40 per cent who said they will shop mostly online.

  • Customer experience and loyalty

More than half of Canadian respondents (54 per cent) said they are more likely to do their holiday shopping with a retailer who could offer a personal shopping service. Canadians are open to sharing personal information in exchange for personalized offers such as coupons (62 per cent) and loyalty card points (52 per cent).
