Uber is getting into online grocery delivery in Canada

With last week’s announcement that it is buying a majority stake in Cornershop, rideshare service Uber signalled that it’s preparing to move into grocery delivery in Canada and elsewhere.

Cornershop is an online grocery provider based in Latin America that delivers groceries in Canada as well as Mexico, Chile and Peru.

The deal is expected to be completed early next year, says NPR, reporting also that Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi plans to bring the Cornershop delivery service under the Uber platform.

Competition in the online grcery delivery space is heating up – just a day before the Uber announcement, Walmart revealed a new deal with Cornershop for grocery delivery in Canada. That partnership will use Cornershop’s own app, while Uber will include Cornershop within its own app.
