Walmart Canada CEO Gonzalo Gebara tells government will consider Grocery Code of Conduct

Walmart Canada’s president and CEO Gonzalo Gebara says the company is open to participating in discussions on the Grocery Industry Code of Conduct. Gebara made the statement during a House of Commons committee on agriculture and agri-food, following a similar hearing on March 8 during which other grocery CEOs from Loblaw Companies, Empire Company and Metro Inc. discussed grocery pricing and inflation.

“I acknowledge that in the past we didn’t participate, but we are willing to participate now,” noting Walmart is reviewing the draft. “We would support any initiative that would bring better conditions and the ability to have more transparency in the whole chain…As long as it’s the good thing for consumers, we will support it.”

Gebara has been with Walmart for more than 20 years and took over as head of Walmart Canada in February 2023, succeeding Horacio Barbeito, who had opposed implementation of the Code.

Like his grocery counterparts, Gebara said Walmart Canada is not profiting from inflationary conditions.

“I know that our customers and all Canadians are feeling the pain from inflation. That’s why I want to state clearly, Walmart Canada is not attempting to profit from these inflationary conditions.”
