Walmart takes on Amazon Prime with new membership program

Walmart Inc. has launched a new membership program in the U.S. to rival Amazon Prime that offers free grocery deliveries.

Grocery Business reached out to Walmart Canada to learn if the program would be available in this country.

“While we don’t have any current plans to launch Walmart+ in Canada, we are certainly following the launch of Walmart+ in the US,” said Walmart Canada spokesperson Felicia Fefer. “Presently, in addition to shopping in-store, customers can conveniently shop on for products at low prices every day and enjoy free grocery and general merchandise pickup. We also offer on-demand grocery delivery in as fast as an hour with third-party providers in many markets across Canada.”

Unlimited free delivery, previously called Delivery Unlimited is a subscription service that allows customers to place an unlimited number of deliveries for a low, flay yearly or monthly fee. Walmart says that current subscribers will automatically become Walmart+ members. Other benefits include the company’s Scan & Go app so customers can scan their items as they shop and pay using the company’s touch-free Walmart Pay.

These benefits come in addition to the retailer’s existing customer offerings like Walmart’s free curbside pickup, NextDay delivery and two-day delivery. Walmart will continue to have delivery options with a per-delivery transaction fee so customers can choose the service that’s best for them.
