Walmart is testing a new service that would enable in-home delivery of packages and groceries, even when the homeowner is not there.
“We asked the question: what if Walmart could help busy families like mine ensure my fridge was always well-stocked? What if we created a service that not only did my grocery shopping and brought everything to my home, but even went so far as to put it directly into my fridge… while I was at work or off doing other things?” Sloan Eddleston, vice-president, Walmart e-commerce strategy and business operations, wrote in a company blog post.
Walmart in the U.S. is partnering with August Home, a provider of smart locks and smart home accessories, to test new concepts like delivering packages inside customers’ homes and putting groceries away in their refrigerators.
The service is being tested in Silicon Valley with a small group of August Home customers, according to Eddleston. “This may not be for everyone – and certainly not right away – but we want to offer customers the opportunity to participate in tests today and help us shape what commerce will look like in the future.”
Here is how the test will work: Customers place their orders on Walmart.com. When the order is ready, a delivery person brings the items to your home. If no one answers the doorbell, he or she will have a one-time passcode to open the home’s smart lock. The homeowner receives a smartphone notification that the delivery is occurring and, if the home is wired with security cameras, can watch the delivery take place in real-time. Once the delivery person exits the home, the homeowner receives confirmation that their exterior door has automatically been locked.
