Instacart plans to bring on 30,000 Canadian full-time shoppers as part of the company’s overall commitment to bring on an additional 300,000  shoppers across North America over the next three months.

Instacart said in a statement sent to Grocery Business that it is “investing more deeply in growing our shopper community in Canada to better serve customers as demand for grocery delivery and pickup continues to grow.”

In the last few weeks, Instacart says it has seen “unprecedented customer demand” and order volume has grown more than 150 per cent year-over-year.

Instacart delivery and pickup is accessible to more than 75 per cent of households across more than 300 cities in Canada and partners with 17 retailers in Canada, including Lobalw, Walmart Canaa, M&M Food Market, Pusateri’s, Bulk Barn and others.

“Instacart remains operational across North America, offering grocery delivery from 5,500 cities and more than half of all grocery stores across the U.S and Canada. We’re actively working with local and national authorities to monitor the situation as it unfolds. We’re adhering to recommendations from public health officials to ensure we’re operating safely with minimal disruption to our service, while also taking the appropriate precautionary measures to keep teams, shoppers and customers safe.”

Instacart adds in the statement to Grocery Business that it is working closely with its 350 retail partners throughout North America “and have seen many of them taking extra steps to support their customers in unique ways as this situation evolves. One example is Loblaw stores (including Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstore). They shared recently that they’re eliminating pickup fees and reducing the cost of delivery items given the increase in demand they’ve seen for their own – as well as Instacart powered – pickup and delivery services and desire to support their customers and make these services even more accessible.”
