For example, the store is participating in a program called Food Recovery in Supermarkets to redistribute food that is still good for consumption to community organizations. To promote the reuse of shopping bags, customers were able to get free reusable bags with their purchases during opening week that began February 27. This store will not provide single-use plastic shopping bags, as part of Metro’s plan to reduce the number of single-use plastic shopping bags in its food and pharmacy banners by 50 per cent by the end of fiscal year 2023.

The store is also participating in a waste management plan to recover cardboard, plastic, metal, paper and organic materials with the goal of zero waste to landfills.

From a design perspective, the new store features energy-saving LED lighting and CO2 refrigeration systems.

Store design elements focus on “freshness, a key priority for Metro stores, according to the company. For instance, it has more than 100 ready-to-eat meals prepared by on-site chefs using fresh products available every day in the “Fresh to Go” aisle.

The food market also includes an Aki Sushi and an Aki Thai counter offering a selection of high-end sushi, as well as Thai dishes prepared in-store.

There are also six self-checkouts and the store will soon offer double electric vehicle charging stations for customers.
