Ontario and Quebec shoppers have a new option in their grocery aisles with the arrival of Fairtrade-certified organic avocados. Last month, Equal Exchange launched the initiative, responding to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly and socially fair products.
Fairtrade bananas have seen a massive surge in popularity, with a 466 per cent increase in sales volume over the past six years. Fairtrade organic avocados are expected to follow suit, tapping into the growing interest in ethically sourced fresh produce.
Under the program, avocado farmers are guaranteed a minimum price, organic differential and a fair trade premium. The program aims to boost the economic well-being of farming communities and promote sustainable agriculture, a statement reads.
