A new “order to shelf” inventory system at Whole Foods is emptying shelves and destroying staff morale according to a report from FoodDIVE.

The new system is intended to control the purchase, storage and display of products, and includes a scorecard system to ensure employees follow the new procedures. Employees quoted in a Business Insider report claimed that the system is increasing their stress levels, FoodDIVE says.

FoodDIVE observes that Amazon has a lot to learn about brick-and-mortar operations, and especially the grocery category. Some employees told Business Insider they hoped Amazon would step in and make improvements, but FoodDIVE wonders if employees are a priority for Amazon, given reports of low morale at its own warehouses and offices.
