Agri-food start-ups in Ontario are vying for $20,000 in prizes to help realize their innovations that would support the agri-food sector.

The Research Innovation Office at the University of Guelph in partnership with the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance is hosting the second annual Gryphon’s LAAIR Pitch Competition.

During the online pitch, which takes place on May 27, five corporations who have roots in the U of G research community will go head-to-head to win a total of $20,000 in prizes that can be used to help grow their businesses. This year’s pitch teams include emendWELL,  Green Feet Ecosystems Services, Harvest Genomics, Neophyto Foods and Psigryph Inc.

“While start-up founders always need to be agile and able to pivot at a moment’s notice, the recent effects of the COVID-19 crisis have made entrepreneurial life even more tumultuous than usual,” said Dana McCauley, Director, New Venture Creation, Research Innovation Office. “But without these innovators who create unique, globally relevant concepts, Ontario will fall short when it comes time to kick start Ontario’s economy. That’s why we chose to pivot our pitch competition to an online format; cancelling because of physical distancing concerns just wasn’t an option.

The Gryphon’s LAAIR (Leading to the Accelerated Adoption of Innovative Research) is an Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance funding program that began in 2014 as a collaboration between OMAFRA and U of G to support the commercialization of research findings.  The program accelerates the development of new products, processes and technologies based on innovative research results, which will benefit the Ontario agri-food and rural sectors.
