Nature's Emporium is the latest Canadian grocer to commit to offering only fairtrade bananas at all four of its locations through a partnership with Equifruit, a fairtrade-certified banana importer. In May, Longo Brothers Fruit Markets made the same commitment for all of its 36 locations in Ontario.
Nature's Emporium's CEO Joe D'addario, says “the decision to go completely fairtrade in our banana offering builds on this legacy, offering our valued customers a product that supports sustainable food production, as well as fair wages and safe working conditions for banana farmers and workers. We are proud to be amongst the retailers who are setting a global purchasing standard for bananas.”
At the time of the Longo's announcement in May, Mike Longo, chief merchandising officer, said the company's goal was to be the most trusted and relied upon food partner, and that includes setting sustainability precedents. "We’re proud to initiate what is becoming a global purchasing standard for bananas,” said Longo.
To meet International Fairtrade Standards, banana producers must provide fair wages and safe working conditions for workers, forbid child labour, minimize the use of chemicals and properly sustain the local environment.
