Costco has reported a 6.1 per cent increase in comparable sales for the retail month of December – which covers the five weeks ending January 6. That increase beat market expectations for a gain of 5.7 per cent.
In the US, comparable sales were up 7.5 per cent during the month, while in Canada they rose 2.0 per cent. Comparable sales excluding changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange were up 7.1 per cent in the US and 8.1 per cent in Canada.
Net sales for the retail month of December rose to $15.42 billion, a 7.8 per cent increase over $14.3 billion last year. For the 18 weeks ended January 6 net sales were $52.99 billion, an increase of 9.5 per cent from the $48.39 billion during the similar period last year.
Costco’s e-commerce sales rose 13.6 per cent year over year for the month, and 27.9 per cent for the 18 weeks ended January 6.
