Costco plans to open its largest store in Canada, in St. John’s, Nfld., at the end of June.
The 190,000 sq. ft. store will open in the city’s new Galway neighbourhood of St. John’s, in the city’s west end. A 24-pump Costco gas station will open about a week before the store does.
The scale of the new store reflects a booming consumer culture in Newfoundland, despite a downturn in the economy, reports CBC News.
"We have a very loyal membership base in Newfoundland and Labrador, and a demand," said Ron Damiani, vice president of marketing for Costco. "There's a tremendous, pent-up demand."
The current 150,000 sq. ft. Costco store on Stavanger Drive will close on the evening of June 26 and the new store will open the following morning. The new store will be stocked by some 300 Costco employees from around Eastern Canada leading up to the launch.
The store was expected to open last fall, but delays in construction pushed the opening back. Damiani described the delays as “nothing unusual.”
