Empire Company Limited’s ongoing expansion of its banners includes two new store openings, a CHALO! FreshCo in Edmonton, Alta. and a Farm Boy in Richmond Hill Ont.
The CHALO! FreshCo store is located in the Tamarack neighbourhood of Edmonton and marks the banner’s fourth CHALO! FreshCo in Western Canada. The new store is part of an earlier announcement by Empire Company Limited to expand its FreshCo discount banner and its South Asian counterpart CHALO! in the region.
"Our FreshCo expansion into Western Canada is more relevant than ever before, as economic realities continue to shift,” said Mike Venton “We are seeing a strong appetite for discount grocery options as the brand continues to resonate with the Western Canadian shopper." He adds that the discount banner has grown 23 per cent since it opened its first store in the West in 2019. By the end of fiscal 2022, the company plans to have 37 FreshCo stores open in Western Canada.
Farm Boy expansion
On April 8, Farm opened its 37th location in Ontario in Richmond Hill. The 26,725 sq ft location has revamped some of its well-known offerings to accommodate the pandemic customer, says Jean-Louis Bellmare, president and general manager of Farm Boy.
“Customer shopping has definitely changed throughout the pandemic. We’ve upgraded our meal-ready solutions in store with new full-service salad and hot bars, along with a variety of to-go options that are convenient and nutritious. We are excited to show Richmond Hill the Farm Boy experience – rooted in fresh, wholesome food, along with exceptional customer service.”
Farm Boy plans to open six more locations by the end of 2021.
