Chicken tops the protein list for Canadian shoppers, says a new survey conducted by Leger for Chicken Farmers of Canada.
Eighty-four per cent of Canadians buy fresh chicken regularly, and 90% list it among the top three meats of choice, ahead of beef (72%), pork (52%) and other meats.
The prime attractions are flavor/taste, chicken’s versatility as a food, and the fact that it’s a healthy source of protein.
The survey also found Canadians have some misconceptions about chicken farming. Only 43% believe Canadian chickens are raised without hormones or steroids – although they haven’t been used at all in Canadian chicken production in more than 50 years. But the industry got good marks for animal welfare standards and sustainable practices.
