The Murphy family has donated $10 million to create the Murphy Family Centre for Mental Health at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. Glenn Murphy was CEO of Shoppers Drug Mart from 2001 to 2007.
The centre will be home to the Family Navigation Project team, another program that helps youth struggling with mental health and addiction issues.
"Mental illness should not be approached any differently than other medical conditions, says Stacey Murphy, who along with husband Glenn and their children made the donation. "It is our hope that with this gift, we will reduce the stigma that prevents many from getting the help they need and deserve."
Glenn and Stacey Murphy are actively involved in the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Stacey is a member on the Foundation Board, and Glenn's is chair of the sustainability committee of the Family Navigation Project.
The $10 million investment brings the project within reach of the $62 million needed to break ground for the 60,000 sq ft Garry Hurvitz Brain Sciences Centre at Sunnybrook.
