Karma Casting in action

As pressure mounts on grocery retailers legislated to stay open, they’re searching for help.

Walmart Canada announced it wants to hire 10,000 people for its stores across Canada while Loblaw Companies Limited set up a web site, loblawjobs.ca dedicated to recruiting temporary employees. Sobeys parent company Empire says it plans to hire laid-off staff from Cineplex and others to bolster its labour force.

Companies like Karma Casting, which has more than 18,000 gig workers, could fill a gap for many grocers and vendors, says Kim Thompson, president.

“Many of our gig-workers have had scheduled work impacted by cancellations and closures due to COVID-19. For businesses looking for support, our gig workers are available for services such as merchandising, retail work, delivery and anything else companies may need help with. The workers are certified for food safety and licensed for cars, trucks and buses.”
