Three executives from some of Canada’s largest grocery businesses took questions from members of parliament on food price inflation on Wednesday, March 8.
Galen Weston, chairman and president of Loblaw Companies Ltd., Michael Medline, president and CEO of Empire Company Ltd., and Eric La Flèche, president and CEO of Metro Inc. appeared before the standing committee on agriculture and agri-food in the House of Commons. At times the exchanges were heated, particularly between Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party, and Weston. All three executives acknowledged the challenges that Canadian families and individuals have been met with regarding the cost of food in an inflationary climate while responding to comments from MPs about their business practices.
