Bill McEwan has succeeded Robert Brown as chairman of the board of loyalty program company Aimia.
McEwan was formerly president and CEO of Sobeys and has been an Aimia director since 2016.
Aimia plans to cut jobs as it charts a course following the sale of the Aeroplan loyalty program to Air Canada in January. The company said it expects to reduce its workforce to about 550 employees by the end of the year. Aimia announced a $126.2 million loss for the fourth quarter prior to the Aeroplan sale, down from $214.7 million for the same quarter last year.
McEwan says the board of directors has concluded there is "a tremendous opportunity available" due to a strong balance sheet, tax assets, and expertise in the loyalty and travel sectors.
The appointment took effect Thursday, March 28.
