The City of Montreal plans to ban all plastic bags in 2020, according to news reports and online comments by the city's Mayor Valérie Plante.
We can't wait 1,000 years to make decisions," Plante wrote on Twitter.
Plante announced she wanted to make the change at the city's executive committee meeting Wednesday morning. In an online CBC story, Plante says "we have a bylaw that we can change quickly," she said. "This is the last year with plastic bags in Montreal, I think that's what we have to say. It's not what's going to fix everything but it's a concrete gesture and that's what's fabulous."
Plante said that while banning plastic bags won’t fix everything, it’s a concrete action in which everyone can take part, according to a Gobal News online story.
“It’s a simple gesture to say no more plastic bags to go do our groceries, to buy our clothing. We bring our bags and we reuse,” she said.
Plante said she hoped other municipalities would follow suit.
