New $10 note coming this year

The Bank of Canada has unveiled a new $10 bill that will enter circulation in late 2018.

Issued in honour of International Women’s Day, the note features pioneering Nova Scotian Black businesswoman and social rights activist Viola Desmond, who was jailed after refusing to leave the whites-only area of a movie theatre in 1946. It was one of the first known legal challenges against racial segregation brought by a Black woman in Canada.

The bill is a trend-setter in its own right, marking the first time an iconic Canadian woman is portrayed on a regularly circulating Bank of Canada note.
