Loop Resource program

An innovative program in Western Canada is helping to reduce food waste. The Loop Resource program is bringing farmers and grocery stores together to ensure that produce and other food products that would otherwise go to waste are instead directed to small family farms where they can be fed to livestock and domestic animals.

The program has enlisted six Save-On-Foods stores in Saskatchewan to supply unsaleable food to some 250 small family farms, reports Global News. The stores have cut their food waste to almost zero for nearly a year now. The small farms run on very tight margins, and being able to cut their purchases of animal feed significantly improves their bottom line.

Products include dairy and deli goods and bakery products as well as produce.

Loop is primarily partnered with Save-On-Foods right now, but expects other grocery stores to sign up soon.
