2,200 workers at Safeway stores in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, Neepawa and Dauphin Manitoba will be in a legal strike position March 18, their union says.
The workers voted 98 % in favour of strike action to back contract demands by their union, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832. Their current contract expires March 17.
A union representative told CBC that the company’s proposed terms would “gut” the current collective agreement.
"Sobeys purchased a good company and mismanaged it into the ground, ignoring their long-time employees' experience and advice,” the rep said. “Now they want those employees to pay for their mistakes."
At press time the company and union were planning to meet, and a strike deadline had not been set.
