Workers at four Safeway stores in Saskatoon and Regina have reached a new collective agreement with Sobeys Inc. that will take effect when the stores are converted to FreshCo locations next year.
Around 320 members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) from the four stores ratified the collective agreement last week, reports the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.
The terms of the agreement reserve 20 per cent of the positions at the new stores for senior employees who get to keep their existing wages and benefits. The rest can opt for a buyout package, a “buydown” that transitions them to FreshCo wages and benefits, or take advantage of a “bumping” provision that lets them assume positions at the University Heights Safeway store in Saskatoon, if positions are available.
The 33rd Street, Confederation and Market Mall Safeway stores in Saskatoon, along with the Regent Park store in Regina, will be closed in March and re-open under the FreshCo banner next summer.
