The Sobey Art Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada have announced five artists shortlisted for the 2021 Sobey Art Award.
The award is recognized as one of the most generous privately funded prizes for visual artists and celebrates emerging Canadian artists of all ages.
Across five regions of Canada, the shortlisted artists are:
Rémi Belliveau (Atlantic)
Lorna Bauer (Quebec)
Rajni Perera (Ontario)
Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory (Prairies and North)
Gabi Dao (West Coast and Yukon)
"I want to personally congratulate these five inspiring artists shortlisted for the 2021 Sobey Art Award. For 20 years the Sobey Art Foundation has been proud to support Canadian visual artists through this award and we are excited to celebrate their exceptional work at the National Gallery of Canada this fall," says Rob Sobey, chair, Sobey Art Foundation. "Thank you to the jury panel for its dedication to this thoughtful process, and to all of the long-listed artists for their participation this year. We look forward to announcing the winner of this year's Sobey Art Award this November in Ottawa."
Each of the shortlisted artists will receive $25,000 and be featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
An independent jury from across Canada selected the shortlist and will continue for the final round, to be announced in fall of 2021. This is the twentieth year of the annual Sobey Art Award.
