Sobeys has announced that it will sell chocolate products made by a refugee family from Syria.
After spending two years in a refugee camp in Lebanon following the destruction of their Danmascus chocolate factory in 2012, the Hadhad family arrived in Antigonish, NS two years ago. The head of the family soon started making chocolate again from a small workshop in their new home. Meeting with success, including global orders, the Hadhads were able to open a large, modern factory in Antigonish last September for their “Peace by Chocolate” brand.
The Hadhads’ success has been noted by Prime Minster Justin Trudeau as a demonstration of the economic value that can be created by refugees.
Sobeys says it will sell Peace by Chocolate bars and chocolate boxes nationwide, including the company’s new rainbow-packaged Pride Flag Bar. Peace by Chocolate says one dollar from each Pride-themed bar will be donated to Phoenix Youth Programs, a Halifax youth support group.
